I left Whitehorse at 8:15 am and it was 52 degrees, and I drove 245.7 miles.
This night was one of the highlights of my trip!!
Nugget City, YK is very close to Watson Lake where we previously stayed and installed the signs in the Sign Post Forest.
The fall colors were starting to be more prevalent. It was a pretty drive, but as I got closer to the campground the smoke from close by wildfires became pretty thick. I was bummed as this was going to be a good spot where we had a good chance of seeing the northern lights.
We stayed at the Baby Nugget RV Park and were parked in a big open area with no trees. The wind must have changed because by the time we had dinner the smoke had cleared out and we had some blue skies.
Dinner of Spaghetti, salad, bread and ice cream was prepared by the campground. About half of our group were delivered their food to their RV’s as they were still isolating.
The owners of the campground, stores, gas station, and gift shop were Linda and Scott. After dinner they talked to us about what it was like to raise a family and live in the Yukon. She said that every morning she would drive her kids 45 minutes to school. They talked about living in the very cold winter and snow, and also talked to us about a moose that she had shot. The moose head is hanging in their gift shop.
Linda also told us that the past two nights they were seeing the northern lights. She said they have been starting anywhere around 12:30-2:00am.
Northern Lights!!
This was the most fabulous sight to experience. It was the “Icing” on this trip to Alaska!
I set my alarm for 12:30 am. I pulled back the curtain in the back of my van and immediately noticed that something was starting to happen in the sky.
I quickly got dressed and went outside. There were already others from our group out there that had never gone to bed.
The sky first looked like someone took a big paint brush and painted a swoop in the sky. It was very faint but it did not take long for the colors and changes to start to take place.
Someone in the group got onto the walkie talkie and made an announcement to the group that the northern lights were present. I went and knocked on the RV door of the other solo traveling woman because I knew she wanted to see them.
The sky made all type of changes with the green and some pink colors moved and changed. At times the lights created streaks straight up and down and sideways.
They say you can sometimes hear the lights, but I did not notice that, but I was in such awe of what I was viewing.
The lights eventually were all around us and overhead.
This was such a fabulous experience I will not forget!
