Top of The World Highway

Next up I drove on the Top of The World Highway!

Top of the World Highway connects Dawson City to the other side of the Yukon River and it meets with the Taylor Highway in Alaska.

Because of the frost heaves and damage from winter the highway is not very well maintained.  It has a lot of ruts, potholes and is a dirt/rock road.  Many folks will not travel on this road for fear of damage to their vehicles.

My theory with traveling all of these roads is to take my time.  I am here for the scenery and views anyhow.

If someone is tailing me, I just pull over and let them pass.  The scenery was beautiful and again I felt like I was in a painting.  Phtos do not do any of this trip justice for how beautiful it is.

To access the highway in Dawson City we had to get onto a free ferry that took us across the Yukon River.

We have 25 RV’s in our tour group.  Because it takes a good 15 minutes to load the ferry and cross the river, our group took volunteers to cross over the evening before and then boondock on the Top of the World Highway.

Boondocking means to camp without electric, water or dumping facilities.  Between those that elected to boondock and those that left the night before to midnight golf, we had over half of our group leave Dawson City the day before we were scheduled to arrive in our next town.

It was actually interesting and fun to be loaded onto the ferry.  Since my van was less than 24 feet, I was able to get in the very short car line and not wait in the longer line which had all the big Class A RV’s and Class C RV’s.

The scenery along my journey on this highway was stunning.  There were just endless mountings and I barely saw another vehicle.

I drove approximately 50 miles to a pull out area where there ended up being 7 RV’s from my group that also stopped and spent the night.

We enjoyed a wonderful evening sitting outside on the Top of the World highway.  It was quiet and the view was beautiful.

There was a wildfire off in the distance but posed no threat to us.  We only had about 15 miles to go until we reached the U.S. border customs crossing and finally entered ALASKA!  Yippie!!

After the border crossing, we had about another 55 miles or so until we reached Chicken, AK.

Next up is finally crossing over into Alaska and arrival into Chicken, AK!
