Watson Lake

Watson Lake, YT

Today we crossed into the Yukon.  I drove 129.6 miles from Liard to Watson Lake.  As you can see by the video below, the Alaska Highway conditions change quite frequently.  This section was under construction.  Our campground was pretty much a parking lot with full hookups.  We were within walking distance of the Watson Lake “Sign Post Forest”.

The Sign Post Forest is a collection of signs located in Watson Lake, Yukon and is one of the most famous landmarks along the Alaska Highway.  It was started by a homesick soldier in 1942.  He was assigned light duty while recovering from an injury and was instructed to erect a highway directional sign post.  While completing that job he added a sign that indicated the direction and mileage to his hometown of Danville, Illinois.  Others followed suit and the trend caught on.   Today there are over 100,000 signs.

With the help of my fellow travelers, we installed an Ice Tea sign and I also installed a sign for the van group that I belong to.  Our tour group also placed a sign that we all signed our names on, that sign is right near the Ice Tea sign.

It was fun walking around and seeing the crazy things that people installed on the posts. Items vary from toilet seats with their names on it to cookie sheets, dust pans, even shoes and many more.  It is a sight to see!

If you ever travel the Alaska Highway, you must stop and locate the Ice Tea sign!

P.S.  I’ll give you a hint where it is if you do go.
