Seward, Alaska

I drove 157.4 miles to the campground in Seward.  It was 58 degrees and a little drizzly in the morning, but quickly just became overcast for the rest of the day and was 64 degrees in Seward.

I stopped only a few miles out of Anchorage at a wetland viewing area.  I saw no large animals, just some birds.

The next stop along the highway was at a pullout to look for Beluga Whales.  It was either low tide, or the tide was going out.  I don’t know if that affected it, but I saw no Beluga Whales.

The next stop along the route was at the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center.  This is an animal sanctuary that is dedicated to preserve Alaska’s wildlife.  They take in various wildlife that might have been injured or needed some care.  Most of the animals end up becoming permanent residents.  They had a variety of wildlife. They even had a three-legged porcupine that had been rescued.

While in the Seward area I drove to the Kenai Fjords National Park to see Exit Glacier.  I hiked the 1.2 miles up a rocky hill to the glacier overlook.  It was very windy up there.  The view of the glacier was awesome, and I am glad I hiked to the overlook.

We took about a 5-hour Resurrection Bay tour which included lunch on an island.  We saw lots of wildlife and enjoyed a buffet lunch

While we were on this boat tour a Military C-130 circled two different times and dropped parachutes.  We think the first time was dropping a marker to check for wind and the second time the men parachuted.

Seavey’s Iditarod.  We made a visit to Seavey’s to learn about the Iditarod and also take a ride on a dog sled (Of sorts)

This is the home of 3-time Iditarod champ Mitch Seavy. Mitch holds the Iditarod speed record of 8 days 3 hours 40 minutes and 13 seconds to cover 1049 miles by dog team.  In the off season they offer dog sled rides and kennel tours which helps keep the dogs in shape.

We were taken on a 2 mile “sled” ride around the property.  Sled dogs love what they do and they want to work hard.  Because it was summer we had several rest periods for the dogs on our 2 mile ride.  After the ride we were invited to see the kennels and play with the puppies.
