Theodore Roosevelt National Park

On my drive to Theodore Roosevelt national park what I enjoyed was the change in the terrain.

A lot of the drive has almost like rolling fields that had smaller rocky hills. The fields were rocky and reminds me of all the boulders that you see in the fields around Gettysburg.

There would be piles of rocks in the fields that the farmers had gathered and put into big piles so that their equipment would not get damaged.  I observed Farmers/Ranchers both cutting and bailing their hay.

On my drive on route 94 W. I saw a lot of ranches and cattle and a lot of beautiful terrain.  You know there are a lot of cowboys and ranches as I saw many horse/livestock trailers being pulled down the road.

As I got closer to the Theodore Roosevelt, Painted Canyon Visitor Center, the terrain suddenly changed, and it was almost like you were looking at mini grand canyons. It was absolutely beautiful. It was a sunny day high 90s although it didn’t feel that hot.

There were several viewing points, and they also were some trails.

While I was at this visitor center another van, just like mine pulled into the parking lot. It was two women from New Jersey. She had her van for almost 2 years and they were headed next to Glacier National Park.

After leaving the Painted Rock visitor center I headed approx. 8 miles into the town of Medora, ND where the South area visitor center was located. The visitor center had a movie and displays about Theodore Roosevelt and the park.

The park had a 36-mile loop that you could drive.  I did not visit the northern section of the park but did drive along the 36-mile loop.

It was interesting to see how the views changed so much even through this short drive.   There were several prairie dog areas, and I saw hundreds and hundreds of prairie dogs.  I also came across several herds of wild horses and saw two buffalo that both were both laying down.

When I exited the park, I turned left and traveled through the small town of Medora.  This small town has a bunch of little shops, bars, places to eat, etc.  They also have a musical in town each night.

My campground for the night was located here.  After I got settled in my spot for the night, I walked into town and checked out the stores.  I picked up some dinner to go and ate in my van.
